Select Flooring is a natural product derived directly from the culm (or stem) of the plant. Bamboo grows wild in the mountainous regions of China which is one of the few places in the world that experience the extremes of hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The growth cycle of Bamboo is subject to these extreme seasonal variations which increase or decrease the moisture content within the culm.
Bamboo grows to full maturity within five (5) years and this growth occurs primarily in spring and summer. During these periods the moisture content of the plant increases to facilitate this accelerated growth. When bamboo is harvested at this time of the year, the culm is full of moisture, resulting in a darker internal colour.
But during autumn and winter, bamboo becomes dormant as it braces itself to survive the harshness of winter. The plant then utilizes the build up of moisture as a rich source of nutrients which are slowly absorbed as an alternative source of nourishment. When bamboo is harvested at this time of year, the culm contains much less moisture, resulting in a lighter internal colour.
This variation in colour reflects the character and individuality of this stunning natural resource and should be embraced in the same way as we embrace the variation in a hardwood timber floor. Bamboo is not a man-made product and it is therefore not possible to control this colour variation. A bamboo floor is expected to contain a variation of perhaps five different shades of colour as product is harvested. When the climate is cooler, it is likely to be generally lighter than product harvested in the warmer months.
